I'd been very nervous to pick up Obsidian, because it seems like almost everyone absolutely loves it. Now I'm thinking, why did I wait so long?! After reading the prequel last year, it definitely seemed like the type of series I'd enjoy, and this first installed confirmed it. I really am a sucker for all things paranormal, and I guess that extends to extraterrestrials now, too.I liked Katy. She's a pretty normal girl, and she's a book blogger! This was interesting, yet also really weird to read about. I got excited whenever a popular meme was mentioned, but then I also thought that any non book bloggers will have no idea what she's talking about. Oh well. I also liked how she could actually admit that she was attracted to Daemon despite him being a jerk supreme. Too many heroines act like it's a bad thing to find someone attractive just because they're mean. That's not really how it works. Although I was annoyed by how much time was spent on Katy's observations of Daemon's flawless physical attributes. We get it, he's amazingly sexy. No need to remind us several times per chapter!
I also loved the budding romance in Obsidian! Enemies to lovers are my favorite kind of romance aside from forbidden romances, and in this case it's kind of both. Being together puts both of their lives at risk, since the Luxen leave a "trace" on any human that's around when they use their powers, effectively putting a target on their back for their enemies to find. Katy and Daemon also don't get along from day one, but once they start spending time together, there is a ridiculous amount of tension! They bicker, bicker, bicker, and then holy hell, things explode! I did like how Katy essentially told him that she won't be with him until he gets his crap together, because who wants to date a jerk?
The plot was fun, too, but nothing special. This will probably be no surprise, but I have to say it: there are a lot of similarities to Twilight. I think that's going to be the case for most YA paranormal series from now on, but there were several scenes that seemed to be taken straight out of Twilight and altered slightly to fit the alien concept. Although I do think I like aliens made of light slightly better than sparkly vampires. Also Dee is giving Alice a run for her money as my favorite bookish sister.

Obsidian A Lux Novel Book One Jennifer L Armentrout Books Reviews
A few years ago, I just so happened to live in one of the towns mentioned in the novel, not the protagonist's town of Petersburg, but the next incorporated town over, about 15 miles out. Coming from the 'big city,' I had never heard of these little towns before, so it was very surprising to me when I picked up this book only to find out in the first couple of pages that yes, this was in fact the same town I had cruised by and lived next to for years.
This personal intrigue is what compelled me to stick around through the first few chapters. While ultimately, I enjoyed the book, I did take fault initially with some of the key characters. The protagonist, Katy, describes herself in a bland light despite most of her features being unique and coveted by general opinion. Also, the fact that Katy's mom was pretty much absent and Katy acted as her own guardian was tiring. I get that it needs to happen so that Katy can experience everything she does, but I can't help but be annoyed that her mom was so lenient and oblivious and was so cool with everything Katy did. And then there was the love interest, Daemon, who is the oh-so-typical jerk in that first meeting (and throughout the entirety of the book) and this hot and cold, bad ass jerk of a man trope is so overdone and not very refreshing. And then there was Dee, Daemon's sister/Katy's instant best friend. I really did like Dee's character all the way through, but what made Katy so special that Dee had to pursue her and make her her new best friend? I just didn't understand why it had to be Katy when there were already quite a few people who would have loved to be her best friend. I think most annoying of all was Daemon's kind of ex-girlfriend, Ash. She served no purpose in this story other than to be an unwanted, but accepted arm piece to Daemon, and to stir up Katy's jealous side. It was embarrassing how she threw herself all over Daemon when they weren't even a couple, and it was even more disturbing how Daemon accepted her behavior toward him. It felt like he was using her just to keep Katy away, and that's just not cool on a few different levels. Despite all this, the fact that I'd wanted to pick out which places I'd been to and what I could recognize from the town kept me reading.
Which I'm glad I did because once you can get past the cliched, almost forced characterization in the exposition, it does get better. The plot expands to a depth to where I wanted to keep going and find out how it played out. The setting was perfect for laying out the groundwork for a bit of the plot, and I might be biased in saying it adds a certain quaintness to the story, an almost magical element. I really enjoyed the world-building the author did, it terms of how realistic it could be if the events happened in real life.
Besides Katy's far too easy acceptance at Daemon's behavior toward her, her character was quite lovely. She's a book blogger, and her enthusiasm for it is extremely refreshing, since readers can share her love and passion for books. She's quirky, feeling a bit goofy when one of her book review videos catches another character's interest. If you have a blog or a private social media account, you know the embarrassed feeling that consumes you when a friend in real life comes across your internet life. Yikes. She also loves to garden, a past time she shared with her father and still engages in. I always love when a character is passionate about something I'm not familiar with because I love getting to know more about that topic, learning just enough to get me interested and to keep up with.
There was always something going on in the story, whether it be a witty conversation, or a battle sequence, so it never felt too slow going. Katy went through her own transformation, and I was quite happy with how we left her off. It's a really quick read, and I'm excited to pick up the second book.
To be completely honest, the moment I found out Obsidian was about aliens I nearly stopped reading. I am simply not a fan of alien novels. Not really my thing. However, since a really good friend recommended this to me, I decided to read at least the first book in the series. I am SO glad I did!! Daemon + Katy FOREVAH!
I am so in love with these two + Dee + a few other characters. This story is rife with love + betrayal + so many difficult stories. Also, I love that she's a blogger! I totally connect with her character. <3 She's so real and complex, but all the characters are multi-dimensional through the story. How else would you be drawn so far into this world of aliens and alternate universes? I also believe that if the bad guys aren't complex, they're not realistic at all. So when I find myself truly wishing a character ill, I feel it's an amazing story.
On of my favorite scenes in this first book is when Katy goes to the neighbor's house since the kids living there are around her age. She's simply going to ask directions, but the ulterior motive is to try to become friends with one or both teens. And man, there is some serious chemistry from the first interaction! I'm rooting for them from the beginning.
Armentrout has seriously made me an alien fan with this series, which is really saying something because any time I've experienced alien fantasy, I'm bored. This...well, I think aliens are pretty fantastic now! You're gonna want to at least try the sample, but you'll be sucked in within the first chapter if you're anything like me!
